Balbuena and Diop
I haven't seen any of the last four matches live, so perhaps those who have done so will have a better picture, but from the highlights I have seen our central defence still gives me the jitters, trying to play the offside trap but seemingly vulnerable to getting it wrong. They appear quite slow to me and occasionally to lose concentration altogether. Our recent results suggest that our defence is sorted: am I wrong about this?

Think it would be wrong to change the back line after conceding 2 in 3 games. Fredericks looks very good too.

Re: Balbuena and Diop
I only have aerial duels won for Newcastle and it says

4 Ogbonna
2 Diop

The earlier numbers are averages per game.

If you look at the official Premier League site,

Diop has 61 won
Ogbonna 58

But Diop has played over 1100 more minutes.

I should hope so, Masher is 34 years old, washed up and playing in China or some other shithole.

I'm fucking better than him!

How does that work? In just the Newcastle match? Or as an average over the season? I never look at stats unless someone points them out so it's interesting to know.

Either way, it is an almost identical ratio.

According to WhoScore

Total - won - lost

Angelo Ogbonna 4.8 - 3.3 - 1.5

Issa Diop 3.6 - 2.3 - 1.4

That's interested Irons. Is there a headers won/lost stat like a tackles won/lost stat?

Going by the numbers at least, Ogbonna consistently wins more in the air than Diop.

Re: Balbuena and Diop
Diop is an absolute monster in the air. He won everything against Newcastle and indeed Man City, as did Ogbonna. I wouldn't say Oggie is better than Diop in the air.

Yes better in the air than Balbuena though.

I am of two minds here. First it is great to have a well established centre back pair and Diop and Balbuena did well especially against quicker attackers. That said neither is as good as Ogbonna in the air. Do you risk rotating depending on the speed and size of that attackers or just stick with it one pair?

Re: Balbuena and Diop
Ogbonna was outstanding vs Man City and Newcastle. I'd keep him in for now. No need to rush Balbuena back. Also, dropping someone who's been playing very well is not good for team or individual morale.

On another note, Lanzini reckons Rice could be better than Mascherano, I believe somebody on here reckons Rice isn't all that, (looking at you Vexed) so I don't know who to believe?

Cresswell is getting back to the player of the first couple of seasons. Great to see. Fredericks is starting to look a real player too.

Ogbonna gets a lot of shit on here but has been decent. Be interesting to see what Pellegrini does. Luckily he doesn’t have to rush him back at all thanks to Oggy.

It’s nice to be finally talking about the defence as something more than a total liability.

Cresswell is fine by me but is becoming a bit of a sicknote...but as one of 2 competing for the spot he's more than alright.

Arthur needs to be moved on...don't think he's a bad bloke but strikes me as one of those players who is untrainable and doesn't learn from his mistakes

Vexed 9:58 Mon Mar 4
Re: Balbuena and Diop
Fredericks looks really promising. Still a bit rash and doesn't look up to the same level with the ball at his feet but he is fast as fuck. If he could learn to cross a ball we'll be laughing. I still think Cresswell is decent at left back. Not sure why everyone has written him off.

Re: Balbuena and Diop
Felt we were much better when Diop and Balbuena were marshaling the back line. Ogbonna is good with a pass, but he switches off too much at the back. LB is a problem, but I think Fredericks could be the best fullback we've had for some time.

Re: Balbuena and Diop
We need another defensive midfielder as good as Rice or somebody who can compliment him perfectly and protect the defence. A top quality left back is needed as well.

With those 2 signings in place the defence will function at a much higher level - second season in Balbuena and Diop should be a lot more settled than this season - which hasn't been too shabby from their point of view - let's be honest

Ogbonna has been playing well and will take some shifting at the moment. Excellent against Newcastle.

Re: Balbuena and Diop
For what it's worth, my take on this situation is this;

A club in our position, with the quality of player we have at our disposal can not both attack/create chances/score goals and defend solidly conceding few chances/goals. It's virtually impossible.

Pellgerini has set his stall out - He wants the team to attack so this leaves us a little light in terms of protection at the back. We're currently scoring more than the oppo which is the name of the game, but when the goals dry up, the cracks will show.

I was particularly vociferous that we needed to play 3-5-2 after the first 5 games bearing in mind our personnel. In fairness, I now hold my hands up and say he's got us playing some good attacking football albeit conceding chances at the other end. But we're winning so happy days.

I really rate the Balbuena/Diop partnership - I think they're doing a fantastic job - Zabaleta is the best player we have - A genuine winner. Left back is a problem, but presume it will be addressed at some point. Fabianksi is the best keeper we've had in many a year. Top class.

Fulham should've have at the bare minimum been on level terms at HT - They kept carving us apart at the back. Second half was much better limiting them to virtually no clear cut chances. We obviously sat a bit deeper and were prepared to hit them on the break as we'd done the hard part in the first half getting our noses in front.

I totally admit getting it wrong with Pellegrini - (Don't get me wrong, long term I'd have preferred Eddie Howe). Long may we continue playing the West Ham way

Re: Balbuena and Diop
I think old Chiggers has posted this as a wind up.
DIOP s maturing nicely, still a child in football terms but the potential is immense.
BALBUENA is turning out to be everything I hoped for, - solid uncompromising South American defender who leaves the fancy stuff to others whilst doing the job he is paid for superbly.
A bigger priority is an upgrade at full back. ZAB is excellent but elderly, FREDERICKS I can see being another BYRAM.
Left back needs a complete change IMO

Re: Balbuena and Diop
Just watched Hibs beat Celtic 2-0 and the m.o.t.m was Ryan Porteus of Hibs only 19 years old. He was faultless at centre back and is a player we could look at if Winston Reid continues as a sick note for much longer.
